What Is Love?

An Ordinary Valentine's Day III

Dear friends,

It’s Day Three on our Countdown to the Most Ordinary Valentine’s Day. For a little insight, I asked my grandkids, Caden and Riley about LOVE the morning after they spent the night. We were in our PJs, the video was rolling, mugs of hot chocolate were drunk, I couldn’t get these monkeys away from the camera.

I’d like to say, TA-DA! Here is a cute video of a four- and six-year-old telling us about love. Instead: Here’s a minute-long vid of two rowdies mucking about on a rolling video.

And, here’s how each one described “LOVE” in between video takes:

Me: “Hey kids! What is LOVE?”
Riley: “Feeling grateful for people.”
Caden: “Happy.”

I’m not sure I could come up with anything better. Three Februaries ago at a coach training, I landed on this ordinary definition of LOVE: Good will. At the time, one of the instructors was asserting an opinion that most people believed they possessed more good will than they actually do. What? I looked up the definition of good will—

friendly, helpful, or cooperative feelings or attitude—

and thought: THAT. I like THAT as a directional for a loving relationship. If I brought more good will to my marriage, that would make a difference, especially the “cooperative” part.

Goodwill seems so ordinary and achievable.

Also, can we give a round of applause to the staying power of LIKING someone?

The other day, a friend told me the reason his marriage has endured its challenges over the decades is simple: They like each other.

Isn’t that powerfully ordinary?

So let’s review. Love = grateful, happy. Goodwill, and liking.

This February 14, here’s to friendliness, lending or receiving a helping hand, and appreciating the people we like.

I like you !

XO Tatyana
