Hi Dear Friends,
Are you ready to listen to a philosophical talk about dirty dishes and the hatefulness of hot yoga? Fill your mug, sit back, and watch the above video as Dan Wingard and I dive head-first into the beauty and complete mind-🤬 of doing the things you:
don’t want to do (dirty dishes)
find absolutely hateful, yet continue to go back for more (hot yoga)
do consistently and yet dread almost every time you think about that activity, even though once DOING IT, you damn well enjoy it 99 percent of the time. What is up with that?
First things first: Dan Wingard is a warm and witty friend with the most delightful, sweet-tart sense of humor. He’s also a masterful drummer and guitarist who performs around town while running a real estate office, coaching, writing, and savoring his role of husband and father.
Dan participated in the first Beauty Hunter salon the Fall of 2021. On a recent sunny winter morning, we sat down in a bustling cafe (that’s background percussion you hear) and discussed finding beauty in a sink filled with dirty dishes and other activities we love/hate.
Dan’s definition of beauty: It’s ALL beauty. It’s the lens you’re looking from.
This morning, as I was doing the dishes, there was this very dirty bowl.
This morning I experienced it in a different way. It’s only outside looking at the bowl that I don’t like cleaning it, but when I’m actually doing it, scrubbing the bowl that’s dirty, I can see beauty—in the ability to move my hand, the ability to change something and make it more beautiful.
What’s a good reason to be alive today?
To experience all of it, fully. I used to think it was to get to the good stuff. Now I think it’s to be in the experience of the dirt of today. I find the beauty in making the dirty bowl clean again.
This conversation is soooo good, watch it ASAP (after reading about the upcoming salons, below). Where do you see the beauty in the activities you constantly “don’t want to do?” Drop a note in comments.
