Dear beautiful friends,
While doing some prepping and pimping of the upcoming Humor, Play & Fun Salon, I’m digging into definition/history of words, starting with H U M O R, and thought I’d share with a video (above).
Here’s the etymology of Humor:
mid-14c., "fluid or juice of an animal or plant," from Old North French humour "liquid, dampness . . . you might know what this refers to; you might vaguely remember something from high school Shakespeare, or you might be going, Oh bloody hell what the what?, . . . this took me unawares, but the more I thought about it, and read about it, the more I rather liked this origin on humor. Humans are so creative!
Next, I looked up the term “sense of humor”—and how that phrase came to life and changed over time. Sometimes following the thread of a word or phrase can shine light on the kind of ideas, beliefs and actions we, as individuals and societies, have created around a concept. I.E., why do we take ourselves so goddamn seriously, when we also insist on a sense of humor in the people we choose to spend our lives with?
More in the video.
If this kind of inquiry and conversation tickles your fancy, join the Humor, Play & Fun Salon coming this October. There are a few spots left. We’ll be doing this on Zoom, this fall. 🐳🦩
💥Starting October 7, 2022
Humor, Play & Fun — A Fall Salon
Fridays from 12 - 1 pm PT in October 7 - Dec 2 on Zoom
Do we dare laugh and josh at a time like this? Yes. Let’s. Absolutely.
This fall we’ll take our virtual walking sticks and explore the frontier of Humor, Play & Fun. What if Humor, Play & Fun (like Beauty) are unconditional essentials, qualities, and experiences that are there for us 24/7 no matter what’s going on? What if we spent some time getting to know Humor, Play, and Fun more intimately; what do these Treasures of Life mean to each of us individually, and how do we express and access HP&F uniquely and universally?
Let’s see how we get more of the good stuff into our relationships, jobs, and daily moments especially when life feels like No Laughing Matter.
There are plenty of studies that prove how fun, laughter, and play help us learn, connect, grow, and evolve as humans. Yet—we continue to withhold these qualities from ourselves in so many areas of life. Have you noticed how you might easily access H/P/F in certain activities, with certain people or groups, and yet in others, there’s almost no bend, no fun at all? Curious that!
If you’ve ever experienced a 😤😩😭 time in life, devoid of laughter, levity or that flexible, delightful sense of humor and flow 🙋🏻♀️, you might have noticed an internal weight, a darkening as if the universal lights were dimmed. This might suggest that laughter, playfulness and levity are integral for our flourishing—for a life that includes engagement, connection, curiosity, and each of our definitions of B E A U T Y. Look at babies—one of the first connecting behaviors is smiling and laughing. What do they know that we’ve forgotten?
It’s no surprise that so many of us value the people in our lives for their sense of humor, for making us laugh at the very moment we want to find the Exit sign. The power of the funny bone!
Of course heavy hearts happen, laughter takes a sabbatical and we’re not 24/7 court jesters, but still . . . what if play and humor are telling us something essential about being alive?
In our two months together, we’ll plunge into new ways to think of, be with, consider and expand HPF. What if we were a society that valued HPF over being serious, appropriate, and a worker-bee? Let’s experiment!
Together, with a group of curious & cool-minded people, we’ll explore our capacity (and resistance) for playfulness, fun and humor, silliness, pleasure, prank jokes—whatever and however it expresses itself through each of us, uniquely.
Let’s enter the darker season by igniting our more natural sense of humor and fun. Do we dare?
