Dear Beautiful Friends,
Welcome new subscribers, I’m so happy you’re here. And everyone who’s been part of the Beauty Hunting adventure, you’ve made the last couple of years an adventure like no other. Meeting new people who are willing to share their ideas, experiences, and curiosities changes lives in the most touching of ways.
🧚♀️
For today, let’s start at the very beginning: Beauty.
What is your definition of Beauty?
This is one of the first questions I ask participants in our Beauty salons, as well as in the Beauty Hunter Q & As. The answers are varied and fascinating. You might not know what yours is, or even think it bears defining; you might land on something, and watch it shift. And yet, there is often something deeply known, almost unspoken about B E A U T Y, especially when we allow ourselves to put Beauty at the center of our lives and consider its vastness, its unconditional nature, its mystery, and essentialness to Life.
Here’s my definition from the first Beauty Salon, Fall 2021:
That which exalts the senses and expands the mind and spirit.
I thought it was massive enough to hold the universe, and it also captured an experience of beauty more than beauty in and of itself.
Here are more definitions I’ve heard and loved along the way:
Surprise
Beauty as a verb, as in “be beauty!”
Contrast
Comfort
Kindness
Connection
Nature, art, a good lipstick—let’s not kid ourselves that superficial beauty doesn’t count!
This year I’m adding to my Beauty definition, and using it as a compass:
Being completely engaged in the here and now.
This feels like a beautiful subdivision of Expanding the Mind and Spirit, and I could use a dose of this, big time.
How about you? What’s your definition of Beauty? Take a walk, sit down with an open notebook, or take the question around with you and see what arrives.
