Dear Beautiful One,
I just had the best week of my life❣️
What made it better than all the others? Let’s start with two beautiful theories:
Call me hyperbolic, but every time I have a peak experience, it gets articulated as The Best Ever, even though I “know” 🧠 it isn’t; but in reality it’s the only experience I can access in my feeling system because it’s presently occurring or extremely fresh and the nervous system is all jacked up 🤩. Whatever is GREAT right now feels like the best ever. Can you relate? Maybe it has to do with standing firmly in *wanting what you have*—it’s ecstatic. (We will explore this concept in the Salon, read on).
My week was comprised of: four AMAZING days skiing at Whistler-Blackcomb with my ski spouse, Kristin followed immediately by a plunge into the yearly behemoth writers conference AWP, held at the new Seattle Convention Center Summit building which was simply gorgeous. I was wary at how a mingling among 12k people might go after a three year hiatus from this kind of stuff, but I saw old friends, made new ones and so much learning and inspiration took place. Such happiness to be with people sharing their craft and insight IN PERSON!
Approaching each event I was wary: could I ski moguls four days in a row this year with ever-weakening legs? As it turned out, yes—helped along by listening to the body’s ask for a wee fuel break, something we used to be dead set against. Magic💥
Would I find anyone to talk to at the conference, would I be awkward and shy would this headache get in the way? Yes, no, and no. I was like a thirsty animal at the drinking pond lapping everything up, zero self-consciousness. My mind-body-spirit department was starving for this experience; something I didn’t realize until I took myself and all the excitement & hesitation to the event. Also: Magic💥
Ready for a clumsy, even dirty transition? Excellent. Indirectly related to Best Weeks Ever, and not always knowing what your spirit truly wants, is the upcoming Desire Salon.
You’re invited! It starts April 5, an hour, six Wednesdays on Zoom, and already has some ace creative, smart, curious humans attending who you will love, and there’s room for a few more.
Here’s what we’ll be considering:
What is desire, why do we have it, and what’s in it? Truth, consequences, wisdom, folly, fate, fantasy? Is that feeling a divine calling or a surge of FOMO? And how is an over-thinker to know??
What is a human to do with a throbbing interior swirling with desires, yearnings, longings, wants, hankerings, yens, fancies, cravings, chomping at the bits . . . Good god, do we have enough words for the emotion of wanting things?
In our 6 weeks of cuddling up with Desire, we’re going to consider what our deepest desires are telling us (if anything), and how we follow the “right” ones.
Is there a “right” and “wrong” desire/want/yearning? Can we trust our gut?
Is there a difference between desire and want? Longing and yearning?
Have you ever received the object of desire or longing, and then missed that longing?
Why does the word “desire” or “longing” feel unrequited or even a tad dramatic 🥹?
How come a certain wanting of something can feel energizing, inspiring and good, while another kind of wanting will feel more like nervous, desperate energy?
Let’s blow up our own Desire status quo…
We’ll also explore a new pet distinction I’m grooving on these days, that’s embedded in Desire:
Wanting something, not knowing how you’ll get it, and caring that you don’t know
vs.
Wanting something, not knowing how you’ll get it, and not caring one bit that you don’t know.
