Play Q&A With Michael Ortlieb

"If you think you’re doing enough, do twice as much."

Happy Groundhog’s Day, Beauty Hunters!

Are you ready to be delighted? Meet one of the most fun, talented, and quirky co-workers I’ve had the pleasure to call a colleague, friend, and now a trusty member of the Beauty Hunter community.

Miiiiiichael Ortlieb!

  • Have you ever watched on as a co-worker started singing a Michael McDonald duet in the middle of an open-plan office space?

  • Have you ever worked with someone who will blast a “zero-point-zero” sound effect while a co-worker is lamenting something gone wrong?

I have! 🙋🏻‍♀️

For four years, Michael and I worked in the marketing department of a software company in downtown Seattle where Michael designed and I wrote. He was always up for a coffee run; he ate beautiful lunches while I scarfed cans of soup. He alerted us to the new Pantone color of the year the second it was announced; he educated us on fonts and beautiful lines, and kept us laughing—and grounded—day in, day out.

Michael excels at finding humor in tragedy, so he’s a perfect person to have on any work team. Watch the video to see how he stood in a corner at his grandmothers’ wakes and poked fun at them.

Husband, father, Shriner, karaoke competitor, runner, Michael is this little metaverse of unexpected surprises. Who else will tell you straight-faced about going to see Puddles Pitty Party, a 6’6” clown who performs his own take on popular songs?

Playing around at Museum of Science + Industry, Chicago

Michael has weathered losses, endured life’s turbulences, plays the long game, and rides out the storms with a sparkle in his eye.

He has been in two Beauty Hunter salons: The inaugural Beauty Salon, and last year’s Humor, Play & Fun salon. His thoughts on play?

“Do a lot more of it [play] this year. If you think you’re doing enough, do twice as much.”

Everyone who meets Michael in the salons wants to be his friend. Get a taste of this fabulous, feisty creative in 12 exquisite minutes—watch the video!

Michael Ortlieb, according to Michael Ortlieb:
“I design. I run. I sing karaoke.
And I belong to a group that discusses poor kerning.”

💥Coming March 15 - The Salons Are Back!💥

Eight Wednesdays, two months, 12 - 1 pm PT, explore the playful nature of life.

Let’s greet Spring by exploring the frontier of Humor, Play & Fun. Consider, for example:

💃🏿What if Humor, Play & Fun (like Beauty) are unconditional qualities, there for us 24/7 no matter what’s going on in our lives and the world?
🕺🏻What if HPF can occur even when we feel like shit, and life looks frightening and hopeless?
💥How can we use HP&F to increase our capacity for life and living—aka to “handle” things?

How do we incorporate play into a life of turmoil and pain? All moods welcome.

🍇The first month will be explorations and antenna raising.
🍌The second month we’ll take some of our findings and curiosities out into the world, play around, return and share what happened.
