Oh beautikins,
I always think there’s far less time to accomplish something than there is. UNTIL my nose brushes against the deadline and somehow so much gets accomplished in that sliver of time, you’da thought I held time open like an elevator door.
I’m always being shown that this thing we call T I M E is a non-linear trickster breakdancer that can move and bend and spin and booty-shake in all kinds of ways, and humans can move and bend and spin and booty-shake with (within?) time in all sorts of ways, too. (The beauty of reciprocity.)
Take for example —>
Six ladies having lunch before seeing Moulin Rouge (see photo). There we were settling into a large round table, smacking our lips in anticipation for multiple rounds of dumplings and green garlic beans, before walking two blocks to the Paramount Theater to see a matinee performance.
We’ve ordered our drinks: bubbles teas, a pot of green tea, ice water. It’s 12:15 pm. I look at my watch and say “Oh we have plenty of time.” My daughter-in-law Courtney looks at me like I’m a bit looney; low and behold, the performance starts at 1 pm, NOT 2 pm as I thought.
Well, shit.
Here’s my immediate reaction: NOT ENOUGH TIME! We’ll have to get our drinks, pay and leave. We’ll NEVER MAKE IT! So what that some of us are starving, we have kids with grumbling tummies. Popcorn at the Paramount, let’s hit it!
Courtney and Erica jumped in with their time-friendly attitudes: WE CAN DO IT! They said. We enlisted our waiter: Can we put in our order, just bring what you can, we’ll pay you up front and we’ll skiddaddle out of here in a half hour.
Goddammit, we did it! We were served FAST, we ate FAST (my favorite/default way to eat); we were out of there by 12:45; we were at the Paramount at 12:50. By 12:55 Erica was performing her magic and talking a few friendly ushers into upgrading our nose-bleed seats (second-to-last row) to front row balcony.
And there we were! It couldn’t have worked out better.
I wish you the best of times ahead. I wish that you experience plenty of time, that you befriend time, that when you have 30 minutes to eat before a musical you believe you can make it and GO FOR IT; I wish that you play with life and be IN IT, and spend less time thinking about what you might do with your time (like some people I know 🙋🏻♀️).
I wish that you watch my brilliant friend Judith Laxer’s TED talk, The Magic of Stretching Time. If time is LIFE and LIFE is amazing, then Time is ______*.
Here's The Rolling Stones singing “Time Is on My Side” on the Ed Sullivan Show back in the times of yore. This song was a guiding anthem years ago♥️
*AMAZING💃🏿
Oh I LOVE this! What is the secret to upgrading seats at the Paramount?! I had no idea this was a thing! I'm impressed!
Thank you for a beautiful Advent of beauty, Tatyana! I've loved each one!
